Garden Work In April

April is the second month of spring, sunny days are increasing, it is getting warmer, the snow melts quickly, forming murmuring streams. The thawed and still damp earth is eagerly preparing for flowering. There comes a period of sap flow in fruit trees, willow and hazel begin to bloom, coltsfoot and dandelion flowers appear.

And winter is now difficult to return, from mid-April, when the snow melts, you can start working in the garden. April is the month when the main sap flow begins, this is the period of swelling of the buds of berry bushes and fruit trees. April is a period of urgent and important spring work. In addition, at this time it is necessary to complete those activities that were not completed in March.

First thing: In the garden

In the ornamental garden and flower garden

  • Planting seedlings of fruit trees of apple and pear trees, as well as cherries, plums and sea buckthorn.
  • Bent raspberry stems (before bud break) are released, then tied to a trellis or peg.
  • After the snow melts, the dry foliage left over from the fall is removed from the site. The leaves are folded for composting.
  • Early spring spraying of fruit and berry crops against wintering stages of pests and diseases. Carry out the first feeding of plants, loosening the soil and its mulching.
  • Shoots from berry bushes (currants and gooseberries) are placed in prepared grooves for rooting. Spud and make bedding for horizontal and vertical shoots of currants and gooseberries.
  • On a bed with strawberries, a film shelter should be placed.
  • Carry out basic measures to protect the garden from cold weather, pests and diseases

Main works

  • From April 15, it is necessary to apply the necessary fertilizers for fruit plants in the garden. Continue grafting fruit trees.
  • Remove if the barriers to retain snow from the strawberry beds have not been previously removed. Loosen the soil and mulch. Remove all last year’s leaves from the bushes.
  • In the third decade of April, currants and gooseberries are layered. The soil is loosened in order to retain moisture in it.
  • In April, seedlings of fruit trees and berry bushes are planted.
  • Carry out pruning of fruit trees and bushes.
  • Lay out the potato tubers for vernalization.
  • After the snow melts, the site is cleaned: old foliage is removed, plant remains – everything can become material for compost.
  • You can start tilling the soil as soon as the weather permits. Since with early loosening of the earth, after the snow melts, more moisture will remain in the soil, which is so necessary for plants.
  • Remove winter trim from trees. Whitewash the trunks again in case, for any reason, the previous whitewash has disappeared. They whiten with freshly slaked lime at the rate of 3 kg of lime, 10 liters of water, 0.5 kg of copper sulfate.
  • Whitewashing will not only protect plants from frost cracks, burns, but will also be a good means of protection against wintering pests, fungi, mosses and various lichens.
  • If trees and bushes have not been sprayed from pests before, this can be done in April, while the buds are at rest.
  • Trees (apple trees, pears, plums), bushes (currants, gooseberries, raspberries) must be treated using a solution of nitrafen (at the rate of 300 g per 10 liters of water). The solution is used to destroy aphids and pathogenic fungi. In addition, nitrafen should also be sprayed on the soil near trees and bushes.
  • To fight other types of diseases (scab, fruit rot, fungal diseases), Bordeaux liquid is sprayed at the rate of 300 g of copper sulfate and 400 g of freshly slaked lime for 10 liters of water.
  • 1st decade of April. Seeds of cabbage of medium and late varieties are sown for seedlings. If the grown seedlings begin to stretch, it is necessary to increase the lighting. To protect seedlings from pests, it is sprayed with means. Time for hardening and strengthening seedlings.
  • The beds ready for sowing are preliminarily covered with plastic wrap. This method stimulates the growth of weeds, and at the time of sowing or planting vegetables, weeds are carefully removed, and the soil itself does not lose moisture. If the soil is inhabited by wireworms, traps are additionally installed for them.
  • As soon as the snow melts and the soil begin to dry out, seeds of cold-resistant garden crops can be sown on the prepared beds. To do this, it is necessary to cultivate and carefully harrow with the help of a rake those ridges that have been dug up since autumn.
  • On the contrary, all the lands that were not cultivated in the fall should be dug up. For digging, the required amount of compost and fertilizers (superphosphate, wood ash) is added.
  • All perennials must be cleaned of mulch, it is good to loosen the soil around them, and fertilize. If you want to get earlier production of these crops, try to cover them with special portable film frames.
  • Depending on the weather, already from the first days of April (from April 1 to April 15), you can sow such green crops as dill, various varieties of lettuce, watercress, you can sow cilantro and leaf mustard on the beds, as well as early radish, zoned pea varieties, and beans. You can read about peas here.
  • In the third decade of April, prepared seeds of such cold-resistant crops as carrots, onion sets, leaf parsley, early varieties of radish and lettuce can be sown. They are followed by the sowing of turnips, radishes and rutabaga. Peas, onion sets, beetroot, its various varieties are sown a little later.
  • From April 15, they begin to sow the seeds of cucumbers for seedlings, early tomatoes in film greenhouses. Seedlings of white and cauliflower early varieties, having up to 5–6 leaves, and most importantly, if it has been hardened, then it can be planted in late April or early May.
  • Prepare greenhouses and film shelters. Make new high beds with edging made of slate or other material.
  • Seeds of frost-resistant annual flowers are sown on pre-prepared beds. At the same time, selected varieties of favorite flowers should be sown on seedlings. You can begin to clean up the shelters made for the winter for ornamental plants, roses and hydrangeas, remove the mulch and loosen the ground around the plants.
  • April is lawn overwintering check month. When the soil warms up at a depth of 5 to 10 cm, then in those places where the plants are either frozen or wet, it is necessary to sow the seeds of lawn grasses. The soil in these places is carefully dug up and leveled, at the rate of 6–10 g of seeds is sown on an area of 1 m². Seeds are covered with a rake; the soil is then rolled and watered.
  • Roses. Pruning is carried out, in remontant roses, 6 to 8 buds are left (for each shoot). For hybrid tea roses, as well as for polyanthus, 2 to 3 buds are left. Climbing and park roses will require cutting off all dry, broken, weakened shoots.
  • In April, young ornamental trees and shrubs are planted and transplanted. Time of planting in flower beds in the flower beds of seedlings of viola, daisies, cold-resistant forget-me-nots and calendula.
  • By the last days of the month, you can start sowing, for example, sweet peas, matthiola or poppies, these plants can tolerate short-term frosts. At the same time, it is worth paying attention and taking care of irises, daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, i.e. all perennial bulbs. For them, top dressing is carried out (20 g of urea and superphosphate, 15 g of potassium salt). The soil is loosened and watered if necessary.
  • Gladiolus. From April 20 to April 30, gladioli, previously germinated, are planted. Planting pattern 15 × 25 cm. Children of gladioli should be planted until mid-April on a compacted grid (5 × 15 cm). Before planting the bulbs and children, soak in a solution of potassium permanganate for 20 minutes. The bulbs can be divided into 2-3 parts, depending on the number of sprouts, by treating the wound surface with brilliant green or charcoal powder. Plant in a hole up to 10 cm deep with the bottom down or on the edge and even upside down. Gladiolus grown in one place for no more than two years (in extreme cases up to three years).
  • Clematis. They are loosened up, then they are fixed on trellises, dry and damaged lashes are cut off, fertilized. In the case of old perennial shoots, they are renewed by dividing. With a sharp knife blade, cut off the edges of the bush, after which they carefully remove it from the ground. In those places where there are cuts, it should be treated with crushed coal or brilliant green.
